The Lyretail Killifish, scientifically known as Aphyosemion striatum, is a stunning species of killifish that is often sought after by aquarists for its beautiful coloration and graceful tail. Native to West Africa, particularly Nigeria and Cameroon, this species is commonly found in slow-moving waters such as streams, ponds, and marshes, where it thrives in warm, soft, and slightly acidic water.

Male Lyretail Killifish are known for their breathtaking appearance. They are adorned with vibrant hues of red, orange, and gold, particularly around their fins and body. One of the most distinctive features of this species is the long, flowing tail fin, which is shaped like a lyre (hence the name), and gives the fish an elegant, delicate appearance. The males' coloration is even more intense during the breeding season. Females, in contrast, are typically more subdued in color, often a pale yellow or translucent, and are smaller in size than the males. As with many killifish species, they are not suitable for aggressive or large fish.

In aquariums, this behavior can be replicated by placing peat moss or fine gravel in the breeding tank. After the eggs have been collected, they are allowed to dry for several weeks before being reintroduced to water to hatch.

Lyretail Killifish require soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, with a temperature range of 72-78°F (22-26°C). Regular water changes are crucial to maintaining water quality. A filtration system that doesn’t create strong currents is ideal, as these fish prefer calm waters. A secure lid on the tank is also recommended, as Lyretail Killifish are known to be occasional jumpers.

In terms of diet, the Lyretail Killifish is omnivorous and will readily accept high-quality flake food, pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. Providing a varied and balanced diet is essential for maintaining their health and vibrant coloration.
