Setting up a new aquarium is an exciting experience, but the assembly and filling process can seem daunting, especially for first-time aquarium owners. However, with careful review of the instructions, double-checking supplies, and ensuring everything added to the tank is thoroughly cleaned, you can create a beautiful and healthy habitat for your fish. If you need extra support, consider asking a friend or family member with experience to assist you.
Filling Your Fish Tank With Water
To begin, set up the aquarium, filtration system, heater, and lights according to the provided instructions. Rinse the aquarium gravel and all decor items before placing them in the tank. Follow these steps to safely fill your aquarium with water, allowing about 45 minutes (or more for very large tanks) to complete the process.
Supplies Needed:
Instructions:
1. Purchase Supplies:
Get a bottle of aquarium water conditioner (dechlorinator) and a bucket specifically for aquarium use. Never use a bucket that has had soap in it.
2. Prepare the Gravel:
Fill the bottom of the tank with washed gravel to a depth of two to three inches.
3. Use a Clean Plate:
Place a clean plate on top of the gravel. Ensure there is no soap residue on the plate. If unsure, soak it in a 10% bleach solution for five minutes, rinse thoroughly with running water, and let it air dry.
4. Flush the Tap:
Let cold water run from the tap for a few minutes to flush out any minerals or residue from the lines.
5. Fill the Bucket:
Fill a clean bucket approximately two-thirds to three-fourths full with water.
6. Pour Water Slowly:
Slowly pour the water from the bucket onto the plate in the aquarium.
7. Repeat:
Repeat steps 5 and 6 until the tank is half-filled with water.
8. Add Decorations:
Place plants and decorations in the tank. Ensure all accessories, especially those not purchased from an aquarium store, are thoroughly washed and dried. Found rocks may alter the pH, so it’s best to use accessories from a store.
9. Install Equipment:
Install the heater and filter, but do not plug them in yet.
10. Fill the Tank:
Repeat steps 5 and 6 until the aquarium is filled with water.
11. Condition the Water:
Remove the plate and add water conditioner according to the package instructions. Add a bacteria starter at this time.
12. Start the Equipment:
Start the filter and heater, and let the aquarium run for at least 24 hours before adding fish.
Aquarium Assembly Tips
Old Buckets:
You can use old buckets if they haven’t been used for chemicals. Clean them with bleach, rinse well, and let them air dry.
Bucket Filling:
Fill buckets only as full as you can comfortably carry and pour.
Tank Size:
Ensure your tank is the appropriate size for the fish species you plan to keep.
