Native to the slow-moving waters of Colombia, this peaceful schooling fish is a favorite among aquarists for its unique appearance and adaptability to community tanks.

The Black Emperor Tetra features a deep black or charcoal-colored body with subtle iridescent highlights, giving it a regal look. Its elongated dorsal and caudal fins enhance its elegance. Males tend to have more pronounced fin extensions and vibrant coloration compared to females. These tetras are peaceful and thrive in groups of six or more, where they exhibit their natural schooling behavior and reduced stress levels.

A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended to house a school of Black Emperor Tetras comfortably. Decorate the tank with live plants, driftwood, and a dark substrate to mimic their natural environment and highlight their coloration. Provide open swimming areas, but include shaded spots using floating plants or tall decorations. Maintain stable water conditions with a pH of 6.0-7.5, temperatures between 72-80°F, and moderate water hardness (4-12 dGH).

These peaceful tetras are excellent additions to community tanks. They coexist well with other non-aggressive species like Corydoras, rasboras, and small gouramis. Avoid pairing them with fin-nipping fish or larger, aggressive species.

Breeding Black Emperor Tetras is relatively straightforward with the right conditions. Use a dedicated breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water (pH ~6.5) and a temperature of around 78°F. Provide fine-leaved plants or spawning mops for egg deposition. After spawning, remove the adults to prevent them from eating the eggs. The eggs typically hatch within 24-36 hours, and the fry become free-swimming within a few days. Feed the fry infusoria or finely powdered fry food.
