The Congo Puffer (Tetraodon miurus) is a striking and relatively peaceful species of pufferfish that originates from the slow-moving rivers, lakes, and floodplains of Central Africa, particularly in the Congo River Basin. Known for its unique appearance and gentle demeanor, the Congo Puffer is a sought-after species among experienced aquarists. It typically grows to around 6 inches (15 cm) in length, which makes it suitable for moderately-sized aquariums. The Congo Puffer has a rounded, somewhat flattened body with a distinct pattern of dark spots and bands across its greenish-yellowish coloration, helping it blend into its natural environment. Its large, expressive eyes and the ability to inflate its body when threatened make it a visually intriguing species.

One of the most notable characteristics of the Congo Puffer is its peaceful and non-aggressive nature. Unlike some other pufferfish species, which can be territorial and aggressive, the Congo Puffer is much calmer and can often be kept with other large, non-aggressive species. It is best housed either as a solitary fish or in a tank with peaceful tankmates that are not overly small or timid, as the pufferfish may see them as prey. Snails are especially important for this puffer species, as they help keep its teeth properly worn down. The Congo Puffer has powerful, ever-growing teeth, and it needs hard-shelled foods to prevent dental issues. While it is primarily carnivorous, it may also eat some plant matter, such as algae or leafy greens, on occasion. A varied diet will ensure that the pufferfish remains healthy and active.

In terms of water conditions, the Congo Puffer requires a stable, well-maintained environment. It prefers slightly brackish water with a salinity range of 1.000 - 1.005 SG and a pH level between 7.0 and 8.0. The water temperature should be kept between 75°F and 82°F (24°C to 28°C), and the hardness should fall within 5-12 dGH. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential, as puffers are sensitive to poor water quality. The Congo Puffer thrives in aquariums with calm water flow, as it is not particularly suited for fast-moving streams or currents.

The Congo Puffer, like many pufferfish species, has the ability to inflate its body when threatened. This inflation, achieved by taking in water or air, allows the puffer to appear larger and more intimidating to potential predators. However, this defense mechanism should not be overused, as it can cause unnecessary stress to the fish. In captivity, puffers may inflate themselves when they are startled, and although this is a natural behavior, it should not be encouraged, as it can be harmful if done excessively.

The Congo Puffer is a long-lived species, with a lifespan of 5-10 years in captivity, provided it is kept in a proper environment. With its peaceful nature, striking appearance, and manageable size, it is a great choice for aquarists with some experience who are looking for a unique and relatively easy-to-care-for pufferfish.
