The Cross River Puffer (Tetraodon pustulatus) is a captivating and relatively rare species of pufferfish that hails from the Cross River region and surrounding coastal brackish waters of West Africa. Known for its stunning coloration and unique markings, this pufferfish is a standout species in the aquarium hobby. It typically grows to a size of 6 inches (15 cm), making it suitable for moderately-sized aquariums. Its body is robust and rounded, with a series of distinctive dark markings and patches that provide excellent camouflage in its natural habitat. These markings give the fish a somewhat “spotted” appearance, with dark blotches on a yellowish or brownish background, which makes it a striking addition to any aquarium.

The Cross River Puffer is primarily carnivorous and has a strong predatory instinct. It will readily consume high-quality pellets, live or frozen foods like snails, shrimp, and small fish, and can also be fed bloodworms and other meaty fare. Snails are particularly important for this species as they help to keep the puffer’s teeth in check. Like all pufferfish, the Cross River Puffer has continuously growing teeth that need to be worn down. Snails are a natural way for puffers to maintain proper dental health, as they grind down the pufferfish's teeth during feeding. While it may display some territoriality, it is less aggressive than other pufferfish and can coexist peacefully in a well-planted aquarium with other compatible species. Providing plenty of hiding spots, caves, and plants can help reduce stress and encourage natural behaviors.

The ideal water conditions for the Cross River Puffer should include slightly brackish water with a salinity range of 1.000 - 1.005 SG, with a pH level between 7.0 and 8.0. The water temperature should be kept between 75°F and 82°F (24°C to 28°C), and the hardness should be maintained between 5-12 dGH. Puffers are sensitive to poor water conditions, so regular water changes and a high-quality filtration system are essential for maintaining a healthy environment. Since the Cross River Puffer is native to slow-moving, calm waters, a tank with gentle water flow is recommended to mimic its natural habitat.

One of the most interesting behaviors of the Cross River Puffer is its ability to inflate its body when threatened. This pufferfish has the classic pufferfish defense mechanism, where it takes in water (or air if out of water) to inflate its body, making it appear larger and more intimidating to potential predators. While this is an effective survival strategy in the wild, it should not be overused in captivity, as frequent inflation can cause stress to the fish.
