As a member of the gar family, the Cuban Gar shares many characteristics with its relatives but stands out for its large size, distinctive appearance, and predatory nature. It is a popular fish among experienced aquarists who are looking for a unique and formidable species to add to their collection.

The Cuban Gar has a long, streamlined body that can grow to impressive lengths, typically reaching around 3 to 5 feet (90 to 150 cm) in the wild. They require spacious aquariums or outdoor ponds, with a minimum tank size of 300 gallons (1,135 liters) for a single fish, and much larger tanks for multiple individuals. These fish need plenty of swimming space and a secure environment, as they are known for their strength and active swimming behavior. The water temperature should be maintained between 72°F and 82°F (22°C to 28°C), with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5. Cuban Gars also require excellent filtration to keep water quality high due to their large size and the amount of waste they produce.

While Cuban Gars are typically peaceful toward their own kind, they can be aggressive toward smaller fish and should be kept with similarly large, robust tank mates. Suitable companions include other large species such as catfish, larger cichlids, and piranhas. Smaller fish should be avoided, as they may be seen as prey.

Cuban Gars are also known for their distinctive swimming style. They have a unique method of breathing, known as “buccal pump,” which allows them to extract oxygen from both water and air. This means they can survive in low-oxygen environments, though they still require well-oxygenated water for optimal health.
