Emerald Shiners are often found in schools, moving together in coordinated groups, which makes them a vibrant addition to aquariums and natural habitats.

Named for their striking metallic green to emerald-colored sheen along their bodies, the Emerald Shiner is known for its iridescent, shimmering appearance that makes it stand out in clear water. The fish’s body is slender and streamlined, typically growing to around 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm) in length. Its back is olive to brown, transitioning into silvery sides that reflect light beautifully, creating an almost jewel-like quality. Emerald Shiners are omnivores, feeding primarily on small invertebrates, plankton, algae, and other organic matter that they forage from the water column or the substrate. In the wild, they are highly active and often feed on small aquatic insects, zooplankton, and detritus. In aquariums, they will readily accept a variety of foods, including high-quality flake food, live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms, as well as vegetable matter like spirulina. A balanced diet helps maintain their vibrancy and overall health.

This species is known for its peaceful and social nature. Emerald Shiners thrive in schools and are best kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals. Keeping them in schools reduces stress and encourages more natural behavior. Their small size and docile temperament make them suitable for community tanks, where they can coexist with other small, non-aggressive fish. They are compatible with species such as minnows, small tetras, and peaceful livebearers. However, larger or more aggressive species should be avoided, as they may pose a threat to the Emerald Shiner.

When caring for Emerald Shiners, it is important to provide an aquarium that mimics their natural environment. They prefer cooler water, with temperatures ranging from 60°F to 72°F (15°C to 22°C), and a slightly alkaline to neutral pH level (around 7.0 to 7.5). They also appreciate well-oxygenated water with strong filtration to maintain good water quality. While they are adaptable to a range of water conditions, regular water changes and proper filtration are essential to keep them healthy. Providing plants and submerged structures, such as rocks and driftwood, can also enhance their environment by offering hiding spots and additional places for them to explore.

Emerald Shiners are hardy and easy to care for, making them a great choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. With proper care, they can live up to 3 to 5 years in captivity. Their energetic swimming patterns, combined with their brilliant coloration, make them a delightful addition to a community aquarium.
