The Glowlight Tetra (Hemigrammus erythrozonus) is a small, colorful freshwater fish native to the slow-moving rivers and streams of South America. With its gentle nature and captivating appearance, it makes an excellent addition to small aquatic setups.

At a maximum size of 1.5 inches (4 cm), the Glowlight Tetra is a relatively small fish that is often kept in groups to highlight its schooling behavior. The species is particularly noted for its vibrant, translucent body and the bright red-orange stripe that extends from the head to the tail, which gives the fish its characteristic “glow.” The glow is most prominent under aquarium lighting, adding an enchanting effect to the tank.

Glowlight Tetras are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods, including high-quality flakes or micro-pellets, as well as live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Offering a well-rounded diet is essential for maintaining their health and enhancing their vibrant coloration.

This species is peaceful and is well-suited to community tanks with other small, non-aggressive fish. Ideal tankmates include other tetras, rasboras, Corydoras catfish, and dwarf shrimp. As a schooling species, Glowlight Tetras do best when kept in groups of six or more, and this will also help reduce stress and encourage natural behaviors.

Breeding Glowlight Tetras in captivity is possible with the right conditions. They are egg scatterers, and breeding requires soft, slightly acidic water with a temperature of around 75°F (24°C). After spawning, the eggs will hatch within 24-36 hours, and the fry can be raised on infusoria or baby brine shrimp until they grow large enough to eat larger foods.
