The Longnose Dace (Rhinichthys cataractae) is a small, hardy freshwater fish native to North America. It thrives in a wide range of aquatic habitats, from fast-flowing mountain streams to slower-moving rivers and lakes. This adaptability makes it one of the most widespread minnows across the continent. Known for its slender, elongated body and streamlined shape, the Longnose Dace is well-suited to life in swift currents.

One of its most distinctive features is its pointed snout, which extends slightly beyond its mouth, giving the species its name. Ideal water temperatures range from 50°F to 68°F (10°C to 20°C), and the pH should be neutral to slightly acidic, around 6.5 to 7.5. Providing a substrate of sand or small gravel, along with plenty of rocks and driftwood for hiding spots, helps create a comfortable environment.

Longnose Dace are omnivores, feeding on a mix of small invertebrates, algae, and detritus in their natural environment. In captivity, they thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flake food, live or frozen options like brine shrimp and bloodworms, and occasional vegetable matter such as spirulina flakes or blanched spinach. A diverse diet supports their health and activity levels.

These fish are peaceful and do well in groups, though they can be shy if kept alone. A small school of Longnose Dace adds lively movement to an aquarium. They are compatible with other non-aggressive species that prefer similar water conditions, such as other minnows, darters, or small, coldwater fish. Avoid housing them with larger or aggressive species that may outcompete them for food or intimidate them.

Due to their need for clean, well-aerated water, regular maintenance is essential to keep Longnose Dace healthy in captivity. Strong filtration and frequent water changes are necessary to maintain high water quality. They are resilient and can adapt to slight variations in water parameters, but a stable, well-maintained tank environment is key to their longevity.

With proper care, the Longnose Dace can live for 3-5 years in an aquarium setting. Their active nature and unique appearance make them a fascinating addition to river-style tanks.
