The Ocellated Puffer (Dichotomyctere ocellatus) is a captivating and distinctive species of pufferfish known for its striking appearance and fascinating behavior. Native to the coastal and brackish waters of the Indo-Pacific region, this species is often found in shallow reefs, mangroves, and estuaries, where it thrives in slightly brackish water with a diverse environment. The Ocellated Puffer is a relatively small but visually impressive fish, reaching a size of up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length.

The most notable feature of the Ocellated Puffer is its eye-catching coloration and pattern. The body is typically a pale tan or light yellowish color, adorned with dark, circular markings resembling eyes—hence the name "ocellated." These markings are most prominent on the sides of the body, and the pufferfish's rounded, compact form adds to its charm. As with other puffers, the Ocellated Puffer has the ability to inflate its body when threatened, puffing up to appear larger and ward off potential predators.

In terms of behavior, the Ocellated Puffer is active and curious. It enjoys exploring its environment, foraging for food, and interacting with other tank mates. However, it can be territorial, especially towards other puffers or similar-looking species, so it is best kept alone or in a species-only tank. While generally peaceful, it can become aggressive towards small or slow-moving fish, making careful selection of tank mates crucial. A tank with plenty of hiding spots, rocks, and plants is ideal for this species, as it provides a sense of security.

The Ocellated Puffer is an omnivorous species with a varied diet. It readily accepts high-quality pellets and flakes, but it should also be provided with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and snails, which help keep its teeth trimmed and prevent overgrowth. Including plant matter such as algae or vegetables is also important to mimic its natural diet. Due to their appetite for snails, these puffers can be excellent at controlling snail populations in aquariums, but care must be taken to balance their diet to prevent nutritional deficiencies.

As a brackish water species, the Ocellated Puffer requires stable water conditions with a slightly higher salinity than freshwater. The pH should be maintained between 7.5 and 8.5, and the water temperature should range between 75°F and 82°F (24°C to 28°C). Regular water changes and a good filtration system are essential to ensure the health of this species, as they are sensitive to poor water quality. The tank should have a sandy or fine gravel substrate, with plenty of hiding places and areas for foraging.

With proper care, including appropriate tank size, water parameters, and diet, the Ocellated Puffer can live for 6-10 years in captivity. Its unique appearance, active nature, and fascinating behavior make it a prized species for experienced aquarists who can meet its specific needs. While it may require a bit more attention and care than some other fish, the Ocellated Puffer is a rewarding species that adds personality and intrigue to any aquarium setup.
