For aquarists, the Spottail Shiner requires a well-maintained tank with clean, well-oxygenated water. These fish prefer temperatures between 60°F to 75°F (15°C to 24°C), with a pH level ranging from 6.5 to 7.5, which mimics the conditions of their native habitat. Strong filtration and frequent water changes are important for maintaining the water quality, as these fish are sensitive to poor conditions. Providing a substrate of gravel or sand, along with plants and rocks for hiding places, will also make them feel more secure.

In terms of temperament, Spottail Shiners are peaceful and make excellent tankmates for other small, non-aggressive fish that enjoy similar water conditions. They can coexist with other species such as minnows, small characins, or other species that prefer calm to moderate water conditions. However, they should not be kept with larger, aggressive fish that may harass or prey on them.

These fish are known for their lively and active swimming patterns, often darting around the tank in a display of their natural behavior. They are best kept in schools of at least five to six individuals, as this helps reduce stress and encourages more natural behavior. Due to their small size and peaceful nature, they make an excellent choice for a community tank with other compatible species.
