The Spotted Gar (Lepisosteus oculatus) is an elegant and captivating species of freshwater fish, known for its distinctive appearance and predatory nature. Native to the southeastern United States, the Spotted Gar is found in slow-moving rivers, lakes, and marshes, where it thrives in murky waters. It is part of the gar family, which includes other notable species, but the Spotted Gar stands out for its beautiful markings and unique hunting style. A good filtration system is essential to maintain water quality, as these fish can produce significant waste.

Spotted Gars are best kept with other large, robust fish, as they can be semi-aggressive toward smaller species. Suitable tank mates include large cichlids, catfish, and other big, peaceful fish. Smaller fish should be avoided, as they may become prey. While Spotted Gars can live alone, they can also tolerate being housed with others of their kind, though it’s essential to provide enough space to avoid territorial conflicts.
