How To Care For Zebra Tilapia Cichlid
The Zebra Tilapia Cichlid (Tilapia buttikoferi) is one of the most striking and aggressive members of the cichlid family. Its body is covered in bold black-and-white vertical zebra stripes from head to tail, giving it a fierce and exotic appearance. Because of its large size, strength, and territorial behavior, it is often referred to as the African Tiger Fish Cichlid.
Native to rivers and lakes of West Africa, this fish thrives in warm, oxygen-rich waters with rocky or sandy substrates. In the aquarium, they require a very large tank with strong filtration, open swimming space, and hiding places created from rocks or driftwood. Their digging behavior means that plants are often uprooted, so hardy plants or artificial décor are better choices.
Zebra Tilapia Cichlids are extremely aggressive and territorial, especially when mature or during breeding. They will fiercely defend their territory and often attack other tankmates. Because of this, they are usually kept alone or in very large tanks with other powerful fish such as large Oscars, Arowanas, or big catfish.
Their diet is omnivorous, and they readily accept pellets, flakes, and frozen foods. In the wild, they consume insects, crustaceans, and plant matter. In captivity, offering a varied diet with spirulina, vegetables, shrimp, and worms helps keep them in top condition.
Breeding in aquariums is possible but challenging due to aggression. They are substrate spawners, with females laying eggs on flat rocks. Both parents guard the eggs and fry aggressively. Their fry grow quickly under proper care.
